Need A Union?

Need A Union?

So what is a union, anyway? Well, if you listen to many in the corporate-owned media, you get the impression that unions are organizations that do little except strike, picket, yell and shout about getting more wages, more benefits and less work time. They create problems in businesses and in the larger economy. They are run by uneducated people absorbed with power and who rarely listen to their members. They bully politicians and non-union workers, and can’t be trusted to do the right thing. In fact, we’re told that best thing working people can do is to put their future in the hands of management and the government that they have purchased!

In truth, a union is simply a group of workers who had the courage to ban together to insist on being treated fairly and share in the pie that they helped to bake. After choosing a union to belong to and going through an organizing process overseen by a government agency (the National Labor Relations Board), and then being certified by that agency, workers have a number of federally mandated rights that individual workers do not. Among them is the right to negotiate with their employer over wages, benefits and conditions of employment. They also elect their co-workers to help run their newly-formed union, and involvement is the key to a strong union.

As a union member, workers are no longer “at will” employees, which is outlined in some of the following material. The material also covers the difference between an employee handbook and an enforceable labor agreement. We encourage you to review the material. If you want further information on your specific situation, click the contact link at the bottom of the page and a UAW International Representative will contact you to answer your questions. No, they will not keep calling you like a used car salesman looking to make a deal! They will give you the answers you need, and if your want to move forward they can show you the way. If not, at least you have learned something new. We hope this information has an impact on your working life.

If you would like a UAW International Representative to contact you, fill out this form. Someone will get back to you within 72 hours to answer your questions and talk further. Again, all information is strictly confidential.
