UAW Retirees
The UAW has the largest, most progressive program for retired members in the American Labor Movement., Our retired workers program goes back to the 1951 UAW convention, and we’re proud of the important role that our retirees play in our union
Our retired members stay active through our Local Union Retired Workers Chapters. This is the structure that enables them to have a strong voice-not only in our union, but also in the communities and states where they live. In the UAW, retired members are entitled to all the privileges of membership except worksite representation (they are not in the worksite!) and the right to vote on strikes and contract ratifications. Retirees can vote for local union officers (except stewards and committee people), and can vote for delegates to the UAW Constitutional Convention. They are also entitled to receive the UAW’s publication Solidarity.
Here in Region 4, we have over 83 retiree chapters where out retirees maintain friendships and help build a stronger union. Chapters set up their own programs and elect a spokesperson to sit on the Local Union Executive Board. They even elect delegates to our regional retired workers council. We are activists in our communities, from community services to political campaigns.
UAW retirees who have question about the chapter should contact their local union president.
