What is Organizing?

What is Organizing?

The National Organizing Department coordinates the UAW's efforts to reach out and support the organizing efforts of nonunion industrial workers. In the face of the increasingly vicious anti-union activities by employers, the UAW has expanded its commitment to assist workers in protecting legal and constitutional rights and in forming their UAW bargaining units. The department has increased the recruitment and training of organizers, the use of volunteer organizers and the development of lead organizers. Another high priority has been increasing the awareness of the membership of the importance of organizing, both to the newly unionized and to the protection of existing UAW contracts and relationships.

The department continues to pioneer in new methods of creating the atmosphere of economic democracy and free choice promised by the National Labor Relations Act but routinely circumvented by employers. Whenever possible, the department seeks to win union recognition by card check and other methods more democratic than an NLRB election. (In practice, NLRB elections frequently permit employers to use their coercive power over employees to distort the right of workers to freely choose a union.)

Strategic Campaigns
In response to dramatic changes in the economy, the UAW is also expanding its use of strategic campaigns in support of organizing, collective bargaining and community objectives. Strategic campaigns combine research, analysis and coalition building to achieve an effective consensus for change.
